I'm surprised that some folks still don't know this, so here you go. Learn something. And if you already knew about it, take a trip down memory lane.
 
Long ago, Super Mario Bros. took the home gaming business that Atari had completely fucked up and saved the day. Then this crazy game called Super Mario Bros. 2 came out and a lot of people freaked out. What happened?! Everything is crazy! By the time the third installment hit the states, those wounds were healed and everything was fine. Years laters, Super Mario All Stars came out on the Super Nintendo and included all three games. There was also a game called The Lost Levels that seemed like a harder version of the original Super Mario Bros. Ever wonder what the deal was? Well, I'm here for you, brothers and sisters.

Basically, the real Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed to hard for the American gaming public and we were given another Nintendo game with Mario characters inserted into it. But the Lost Levels was the real deal with graphical updates.

There you have it. Mystery solved.
